1970 Plymouth Road Runner Convertible

The Road Runner was introduced in 1968 and produced through 1980.  As the 60's came to an end a lot of muscle cars were moving away from their roots as they gained new features and became more expensive.  Plymouth released the Road Runner in an effort to keep the muscle car era alive by going back to the basics and focusing on performance.  To use the name, likeness and "beep beep" sound from the popular Wile E. Coyote cartoon, Plymouth gave Warner Bros $50,000 and also went on to spend $10,000 more developing a special horn.  The first generation was from 1968 to 1970.  They expected to sell 20,000 units in '68 but clearly underestimated things as the production went up to 45,000.  It was clear the market responded well and the Road Runner rose to the 3rd highest selling muscle car.  In 1970 they continued with the same basic Road Runner body but redesigned the front and rear end appearance.  This would be the final year for the convertible and only 834 were made making the extremely clean '70 Convertible you see here quite rare.  This car has been completely restored and is one of the finest examples of these cars you are going to find.  The body is in excellent condition, rust free, and repainted in its original Vitamin C paint with Black center stripe and Road Runner side graphics.  The original chrome and stainless trim is all straight and has a beautiful shine.  The Orange is paired with a White power convertible top which is a rare combination to find.  The car rides on its original Silver Rallye wheels wrapped with reproduction Goodyear Polyglas GT tires which would be correct for the car.  That speaks to the level of detail in this build.  It's like jumping back to 1970 and visiting your local dealer's showroom.

Getting this car cruising down the road is date correct 383 motor.  Under the hood the car is like brand new.  The motor has factory specs, the correct dual snorkel air cleaner and even Plymouth hoses.  Small touches like original assembly line check point markings were applied and really make it stand out.  The motor runs extremely well with zero issues whatsoever.  The factory 4 speed manual transmission shifts smoothly and transfers power back to the original rear end.  Still not impressed?  The car was ordered with factory power steering and factory power brakes with discs up front all of which are functioning properly.

The beautifully redone White interior is in excellent condition throughout and, as we mentioned earlier, when paired with Orange paint is a rare option.  It has nice high back bucket seats sitting to each side of the original center console with wood grain pistol grip Hurst shifter.  All of the original interior trim from the stainless to the faux wood grain are in great shape. The dash has all been refinished and fitted with its original gauges and original Chrysler stereo.  The gauges, which include an in dash tachometer, have all been refurbished and are working properly.  The original 3 spoke steering wheel looks great and wears its correct "Beep Beep" horn button.  The trunk has been nicely restored as well and houses the Orange painted spare with Goodyear Polyglas tire.

The car comes with a complete build book containing picture documentation of everything done throughout the process.  If you want a clean, rare and collectible Road Runner don't let this one slip away.  In recent decades Mopars have become some of the most sought after collector cars so not only is it fun to look at and drive, it is truly an investment.  These cars sell quick so we don't expect it to be around for long.
