Engine
completely rebuilt with all new parts including the turbo rebuilt by
Steve Goodman at Rear Engine Specialists in Golden Colorado. Rear
Engine Specialist also did the heads which included staking the
valve seats, de- burring the fins, and doing mild porting for
optimal flow. Receipts are available for detailed parts and work
performed. Most items were purchased from Clarks Corvairs. All
exhaust and tubes were ceramic coated for looks as well as
performance. We have never dyno’d this Flat Six engine, but are
guessing it to be around 200 horses. You will not be disappointed
with it’s performance or its appearance with a professionally
chromed engine shroud.
The
carburetor was changed from the stock Carter to a two barrel
Stromberg with a custom air intake system. The Stromberg was a
popular conversion that originally was sold as a kit in the 60’s and
70’s. Some consider it the best choice for the Turbo engine as it
adds HP with increased drivability that is easy to maintain.
The
Ignition System has the stock distributor with a Petronix Igniter
along with a MSD 6-BTM Box with a 6000 rev limiter.
The 6 BTM is ideal
for engines with a turbo or supercharger. Not only will the engine
benefit from MSD's full power CD sparks, but there is also an
adjustable boost/timing retard circuit to prevent detonation. When
your turbo or blower forces the air/fuel mixture into the engine,
the cylinder pressure inside the combustion chamber increases. The
result is a great increase in power but this can also lead to
detonation that can result in severe engine damage. The 6 BTM lets
you dial away detonation by retarding the timing in relation to the
boost pressure. A dash mounted control knob lets you adjust the
amount of timing retard. It can be adjusted from 0 degrees per pound
of boost to 3 degrees per pound (up to 15 degrees). The 6 BTM also
shares the Soft Touch Rev Control of the 6AL Ignition for over rev
protection. The BTM is supplied with rubber shock mounts and rpm
modules for 3,000, 6,000, 7,000 and 8,000 rpm.
The transmission is
a completely rebuilt with 4 -speed Saginaw. The 4-speed was a
very popular option that most purchasers chose. The enitre
drive train on the car has been rebuilt and functions like new.

that were replaced during the restoration included:

The Interior was
completely changed out with all new door panels, carpet, package
tray and seats. Even the floors have been dynomatted. The back seat
is stock, while the front buckets are custom from a Fiero. They are
much more comfortable than the original springy bucket seats that
made you slide around. The fabric is orange tweed that breathes well
and does not hold the heat or cold as the original vinyl does. The front buckets
are customized with the turbo emblem embroidered on
top of seats. There is a new alpine system that was professionally
installed with new speakers and a small amp that is hidden from view
so you can listen to your favorite tunes as you cruise the streets.
It has all new door, hood and trunk weather-stripping and window
fuzzies.
All gauges and
lights work as they should, even the cigarette lighter.
The car was painted
last year and shines well. It has a
nice glossy finish. It is done using a 2 Stage PPG paint named Medium
Orange Metallic, which was used for only one year on the ’88 Cameros. The floor pans are very solid with no rust. All chrome
looks beautiful, was either replated or polished as needed. The
bumpers shine nicely, but do have some very slight scratches and wear that show
upon close inspection.
The car performs
very well and is joy to drive. If you would like to read more about
